If one is looking for a 7 or 8 seat family car in Australia, there are not many choices from the same car manufacturer. For example, Toyota has 7 seater cars like Wish and Vellfire, and Mazda has Mazda 8 which are not available in Australia.

Some of the current 7 or 8 passenger cars (which are mostly SUVs) available at car dealers throughout Australia are:

Ford Territory - SUV.
Honda Odyssey - Car like people mover.
Mitsubishi Challenger and Pajero - SUV
Nissan  Patrol and Pathfinder - SUV
Toyota Kluger, Prado and LandCruiser - all three are considered SUVs.
Toyota Tarago - 7 or 8 seater Van
Volvo XC90 - a 7 seater SUV which is due for a new model since it has been close to 10 years since it was first launched.

The good news is, we now get the latest Toyota Prius V which is a hybrid 7 seater car and Nissan has also launched a compact SUV which has 7 seats named Dualis+2.

The new Toyota Prius V - 7 Seat Car

The Toyota Prius V 7 seater hybrid car is priced around AUD40,000 drive away, in Melbourne, Australia. If you note from the earlier image, Ford Territory, Honda Odyssey and Toyota Kluger prices start aroundAUD40K too.

The Prius V is actually a 7 seat wagon with 1.8L engine with Hybrid Synergy Drive fitted with 7 airbags and 6.1" reverse camera screen, too.

Warranty is 3 years or 100,000km whichever comes earlier.

The New Nissan Dualis+2 SUV

The Nissan Dualis+2 is a compact SUV with 7 seats and the starting price is just around AUD30K for a basic unit called ST CVT Auto. There are four models and the Ti CVT Models are fitted with cameras that give you 360 degree view around the car.

The Australia Nissan Dualis+2 has an all aluminum 2.0L engine and comes with CVT automatic transmission with 6 speed M-Mode.

With a starting price of AUD30,000 for a 7 passenger SUV, it must be one of the cheapest new 7 seat vehicle in Australia. It has 6 air-bags and the warranty period is 3 years or 100,000km whichever comes first, similar to the Toyota Prius V. However, do check with your dealer and you might get another 3 years extension for corrosion.

Honda Odyssey

The Honda Odyssey is a minivan with car like height and therefore the drive would be like similar to a car without the command position provided bu SUV. The base model starting at just about AUD40K comes with Satellite Navigation and Reverse Camera too.

Toyota Tarago (also known as Estima or Previa) 7 or 8 Seats Multi-Purpose Vehicle (MPV)

Being a van, the Toyota Tarago would fit 8 adults comfortably and also make it easier for the people in the third row to get in and out compared to a SUV.

The base model of the Tarago would cost you about AUD50K for a 2.4L engine and goes up to AUD78K for the Ultimate V6 model.

Mazda CX-9 Facelift 2013 Model

The Mazda CX-9facelift model was launched in Sydney Australia recently and is expected to be available in December 2012. The current Mazda CX-9 comes with 3.7L engine and the FWD model is selling around AUD43K

As for luxury cars, the Audi Q7, BMW X5 and Mercedes Benz R and GL Class are 7 seaters and are all priced above AUD100K (after Victoria State  luxury car tax and Stamp Duty).

Too bad Toyota Australia does not bring in the Toyota Alphard or Vellfire VIP MPV (see images below). I bet if the Vellfire was to be brought into Australia, many people who are chauffeured will trade in their Mercedez Benz or BMW for it, haha.
